Overseas credit card mix-up costs Brit

June 17 2009

A Brit has told of how he has been left out of pocket after an incorrect foreign transaction was processed by his credit card provider.

Brian Hick has told the Daily Mail that he hired a car in Sicily and used his Alliance & Leicester credit card to cover €1,600 (£1,361) excess he had to pay.

When the car was returned undamaged his credit card was debited to the same figure by the firm, which refunded the money on the same day when the mistake was spotted.

However, the exchange rate had changed even during the short-time difference, so £1,587.65 was deducted but only £1,493.06 was refunded - resulting in Mr Hick ending up over £94 out of pocket.

UK payments association Apacs recently advised Brits to utilise prepaid cards while abroad this summer.

It claimed card solutions are the safest way to pay while in a foreign country, adding that people should take "various methods of payment".
