Police corporate credit card misuse 'beggars belief'

June 15 2009

It has been reported that up to 300 police officers are currently under investigation for misusing their corporate credit cards.

During 2003, the Metropolitan Police handed out over 3,500 American Express credit cards to officers and staff in an attempt to reduce expenses bureaucracy.

It has now emerged that over 300 detectives are now suspected of millions of pounds worth of fraud through the abuse of the cards after all the card solutions accounts were examined.

Of the cases, 46 have already resulted in criminal investigations overseen by the Police Complaints Commission.

Jenny Jones, member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said: "Well done to the current auditing team for uncovering this.

"It beggars belief that our police, who are supposed to be solving crime, are suspected of fraud on a grand scale."

Such fraud in the future could be avoided by issuing prepaid credit cards to officers in order to limit spending.

It was recently revealed that 18 officers at Salford Council ran up credit card bills over almost £70,000 in 12 months, the Salford Advertiser reported.

No proof of income required to be eligible for a prepaid card from PIXPAY.
